Uber Health to Expand Innovative Mobility Service - Uber Caregiver
Uber Health, part of ride-hailing giant Uber’s portfolio of offerings, has announced the launch of a new service. Uber Caregiver will enable users to authorize a caregiver to request rides, deliveries, and other mobility services on their behalf. The program will provide real-time progress tracking and allow payment using the care recipient’s health benefits.
This new service is the latest in a series of innovations from Uber Health, which include last year’s expansion beyond transportation into the delivery of groceries and other over-the-counter products, and an exciting partnership with healthcare analytics company Socially Determined to use data to expand access to mobility services, and to food and medication delivery.
While an Uber account is required to specify someone as a caregiver, the company notes that users do not need a smartphone to use the new service. Rides can be ordered by anyone who owns a phone with texting capability. Additional features, such as the ability for caregivers to order groceries, medical supplies, and other items on their loved one’s behalf, are on the roadmap for launch later this year.
A 2021 survey from AARP showed that approximately 53 million Americans are caregivers, so innovations such as this new service from Uber are immensely helpful as people live busier lives with more obligations and responsibilities.
Uber plans to form partnerships with Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, and commercial plans, and noted that, in order for a health plan to enable caregiver support for its members, Uber must be in its network for supplemental benefits.
